"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable..." (II Timothy 3:16a).
The Bible instructs its readers about itself. It teaches us how we are to think of it, how we are to understand it. If we believe the Bible, then we must think of it the way it presents itself. We must accept the things it says about itself, or we are not really accepting the Bible.
The Bible claims in the quote given from the book of Timothy to be "Given by inspiration of God", literally God-breathed. In the fullest possible sense it is declaring itself to be the very Word of God Himself. Just as the sounds and words that you form with your breath are the words spoken by you, the scripture is God’s Word. The things you say are formed by you breathing them out, and the Bible was given by God speaking.
If we only had a book that contained some words or ideas from the Creator, that would be a great treasure - but we are told here that the Scripture (the writing) IS God’s Word as the very breath of His mouth. We don’t have to sort through it to find what things are God’s Word, for all of the Bible is.
Some stumble at the human side of Bible authorship. But the Bible explains this for us too. ‘For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" (II Peter 1:21). The men used by God to pen the Bible were "moved" or borne along by the Almighty power of the Holy Spirit of God. Now if there is such a person as God who is infinite in power, He certainly could do what He said. He did, and nobody has ever proved otherwise. It is clear that the Bible teaches it has not suffered in its Divine authorship at all by the fact that God gave the message through holy men chosen to write it out.
The things the Bible teaches about right and wrong, about coming prophetic events, about how to get to heaven rest upon this unique foundation. They claim to be a revelation from the God of heaven to us. The All-knowing God has revealed to us what we could not know without His Word of Truth.
